GRAN’S 80TH BIRTHDAY CAKE FROM THE CUPCAKE TARTS, STRAND

Have you ever seen anything more adorable in your life? When I told Michelle from The Cupcake Tarts “tea and teddies” and she sent me a template of this, I knew it was meant to be.

 

HOW IT ALL STARTED

It all started when Michelle’s sister, Kim, opened up a vintage-style coffee shop: while Kim headed the decor department, it was up to Michelle to make the cake to accompany the coffee. One day, a customer asked Michelle to bake her 6 cupcakes for take away. More and more people started doing this, until the demand became so high that they left the coffee shop and started baking full-time. They did this together for 6 years, and for the past two years Michelle has been running The Cupcake Tarts singlehandedly.

 

INSIDE THE MASTERPIECE

Michelle’s passion lies in making the cake taste as good as it looks. Considering how gorgeous her cakes are, you can imagine that this isn’t an easy task! Michelle only uses the best quality ingredients, in order to produce the best quality in flavour. Free range eggs, pure butter, fresh cream are but some examples, and the chocolate ganache consists of 70% real chocolate.

The Cupcake Tarts’ standard cakes can be either chocolate mud or moist vanilla, sandwiched together with buttercream and chocolate ganache. This is then smothered in chocolate ganache, covered in fondant, and then finished off with specialized handmade decorations. She also does red velvet, cupcakes, cake pops and biscuits, but I can say with confidence that what ever you request she will be able to do – brilliantly.

WATER-SAVING AT THE CUPCAKE TARTS

I asked Michelle how The Cupcake Tarts is being affected by Cape Town’s water crisis, and she said that she has had to make some changes to her typical set up. She now uses bottled water to rinse out the implements she uses frequently, and only does one load of dish washing per day. Some bakers have stopped baking completely due to the water restrictions, but Michelle is trying her best to conserve water, while still keeping all of us customers happy.
