REVIEW – TURN ’N TENDER “R40 STEAK AND SIDE SPECIAL” AT THE SANCTUARY, STRAND

From 15-21 May 2017, Turn ’n Tender Steakhouse at the Sanctuary in Strand is running an awesome birthday special. For only R40,00, you receive a 300g sirloin steak with your choice of chips, rice, baked potato, baked sweet potato, mash, pap ’n gravy, vegetables or a side salad. (Special available from 11h30-16h30.)

The Sanctuary is one of my favourite local places to wine and dine, because it is so central. I especially love it because of the stunning view over the little lake – but I did notice the fireplace inside the restaurant, making it a perfect winter option, too.

As expected, this special is extremely popular; when we arrived at around 13h00, it was full to capacity and we had to wait for a table. Luckily one freed up within about 5 minutes, and I was ecstatic to have bagged a spot out on the deck. By the time we left, around 15h00, it had quietened down considerably, so I recommend doing a late lunch if you’re not into crowds. That being said though, our waiter was very efficient considering how busy they were, and the food took an average amount of time to arrive – which is notable, again, considering every single table was occupied.

I often find that with specials like this, the food is rather mediocre because they’re making much larger quantities than usual, so the quality tends to decrease. I am very happy to report that this was not the case at all. I have eaten here before without there being a special, and the food definitely maintained the same standard.

Two important things to note: corkage and sauces. They charge R55,00 corkage per bottle which is great, especially if you have wine at home and you’re looking to keep costs low. If you are indeed looking to keep costs to a minimum, maybe skip ordering a sauce, as each sauce is charged at around R37,00 – which is average for a sauce, but in this context, the same price as the whole meal!

Overall, we had a lovely afternoon enjoying the last of the good weather with a glass of wine out on the deck. If you don’t make it in time for the special, I recommend giving Turn ’n Tender a try anyway. Definitely a great addition to our Helderberg basin.
